Strange as it may seem we can actually thank Adolf Hitler for the invention of the beetle whose production started around 1938. He wanted a mass produced car for people to use to enable easier transportation plus it created a ton of jobs after World War 1 which pretty much devasated the job market and caused massive unemployment. So as a result of this, Volkswagen was born in Germany and the long history of the Beetle began. By the way Volkswagen actually is German for ‘people’s car’.
Ferdinand Porsche originally designed the Beetle under the guidance of Hitler. Hitler wanted the car to be inexpensive so everyone could have one, give at least 42 miles to the gallon of fuel and it had to carry 2 adults and 3 children. Ferdinand is also now famous for the Porsche range of sports cars which we all know well. The Beetle was designed with an air cooled four cylinder engine and the body ended up actually taking the shape of a ‘Beetle’, which is where its name came from.
There were hundreds of thousands of these cars made, and over the last century the Beetle has established itself as a hero in the automobile industry and has become a real classic. They are built to last and offer, inexpensive, reliable motoring, they are so tough in fact that there were many German promotional films produced showing the Beetle being subjected to horrific stresses, such as being driven off steep sand dunes, falling to the bottom, rolling and then driving off again! What a tough motor! Some people even say they are bomb proof.
If you want a fast car then the VW Beetle may not be for you, they are not the quickest around but will usually provide a respectable 0-60
MPH in around 15 seconds. Not everyone needs to be the fastest car on the road and there are plenty of other benefits that the Beetle can offer, such as cheap running costs, easy to fix, tough and reliable. Plus of course they have more character than most cars will ever have!
It’s easy to find a VW Beetle for sale, there are loads of them for sale, plus there are many owner clubs and events that you can get involved with. Many people buy older models and restore them to showroom condition and at this point they are worth a LOT of money. If you are a car enthusiast then you should definitely look for a VW Beetle for sale as it will make a very rewarding project.
